A Review of Emily’s Gift by Julia P. Lynde

Emily's Gift by Julia P. Lynde

Emily’s Gift by Julia P. Lynde

Perhaps one of the things that seems to be the hardest for authors to get a grasp of is that Succubi do not have to be evil. They do not have to kill, do not have to be uncouth, or worse for that matter. It is difficult to find works that focus on other, more important aspects not just of the Succubus herself, but of those that come into her world. But when that happens, it really is something special…

  • Title: Emily’s Gift
  • Author: Julia P. Lynde
  • Length: 9,400 Words
  • Publishing Date: December 16, 2012
  • This work at Amazon.com

The story is of:

Emily’s daughter has taken a bad path in her life, and Emily turns to the fae succubus, Anita, for her own brand of help.

The thing about this story that makes it special are the layers within it. It is, I think, the mark of good storytelling when the author is invested in their characters to the point where they become real and not cut-outs or puppets being played with.

This starts with Emily.

Emily is both innocent and unsure of herself. I think that is the best way to explain it here because while she knows who she is asking a favour of, she doesn’t understand who Anita, the succubus of the story is. This comes to haunt her at first, change her life second, and in the end opens a world, and much more, that she even could have imagined.

The same is true of the Succubus in this story Anita. She is described as a Fae Succubus, which in this story means that she does not look like the classic Succubus, no horns or tail, but in truth that isn’t that important to her character. What is comes to her powers, which are well described and portrayed, her personality, which while Domme in nature is tempered with something more than could be expected from the beginning of the story. If Emily becomes more than she is, then Anita is changed in ways, and reasons, that matter. And the thread running through this is the gift, or rather gifts, that Emily has shared with her.

The one character that changes the most, that moves from someone very ugly to something better is Nicole. While she is not the true heart of the story, she is the catalyst that makes all else happen. She changes, like her mother and Anita, by the end of the story, and what is more, the ending of the story, where Nicole finds herself, it is… satisfying to me.

There is a mix of both joy, passion, and, regrettably, sorrow in this story. It is truly heartbreaking what happens, the loss that comes is tragic in more ways that I can explain without spoiling the story. Needless to say, the author did, in the moment when joy ends and grief begins, turn the story into something more than it was to that point by far.

There was one thing in the story that jarred me out of it. It happened more than once and I hope the author has seen the problem and corrected it. Several times they write “suit” when they mean “suite” when a character speaks about a room in Anita’s home. It’s a minor issue I know in an overall well written work, but it just kept getting to me as I read. For most it will not be an issue I am sure, but for me.. just really was something that got to me over and over again.

I would have liked to see where the story goes after the end, there is a door there to walk through, but it isn’t taken. Now I know that, in truth, it wasn’t to be, but I can think about what transpires after the end of this story… and I have to admit that I do… a lot.

I’m giving this work four and a half pitchforks out of five.

It’s very close to perfect, and I really would like to say it is…

Succubi Image of the Week 261

It’s been a very long time since a succubus from the Castlevania game has been a Succubus of the Week… That’s mainly because I really haven’t see any images of them that I really like.

I finally found one… a really good one I think…

Kissing Succubi by Candra

Kissing Succubi by Candra

This is called Kissing Succubi, and is by the artist Candra. You can click on the image for a larger version, and you can find the page on DeviantArt that I found this work here and the artist’s page on DeviantArt as well here.

I like the art style of this artist, it looks like a portrait of the two succubi more than anything else. The softness of the art gives this a lovely look which I think is adorable too… They aren’t creatures of pure sexuality here either, they are, I think, two beings in love with each other and I think that’s an interesting aspect of the Succubi in this universe…

Of course the lack of horns and tails is a little bit bothersome for me as it always is, but other than that little nitpick, I think that the artist did wonderfully in breathing life into them…

Do visit their site for more wonderful art!

Probably the most expensive Succubus costume ever…

And so the first costume of 2013 arrives… And it is a doozy to be honest. I’ve looked at costumes that are expensive. I mean, 400 or 500 dollars for a costume? We’ve seen that a couple of times…

But this one wins the contest hands down.

The thing is, I can’t quite understand why it does…

Fire Devil Costume

This is called the Fire Devil Costume and it comes with a corset, mini tutu, a pair of wrist bands, choker and set of devil horns.

And all of this costs $750 US.

And there is a tail as well, but that will set you back another $50…

So… $800 for this, and you don’t get shoes or stockings or a pitchfork…

There is some of this I like, but there is so much more than I really don’t like.

The choker is the first thing, that just looks wrong and never should have been made. The wrist bands… really don’t like or dislike them honestly.

I like the corset and I admit that I like the mini-tutu as well, but I can’t justify paying $800 for all of this…

And I have the worst feeling that the tail is going to be horrid and since you can’t see it, save that it has the same pattern on it as the dress and horns do… I’m not sure I think I like that…

While the horns are a lot larger than I like, I have to admit that they aren’t the worst I have seen, and, at least they match the rest of the costume, which really helps a lot…

In spite of the cost, which I think is nutty, I’ll give this two and a half pitchforks out of five.

Cut the price in half, and I’d give it a four…

The 2012 Succubi Year in Review

Normally I review the previous year on the last day of the year, but not this time… I wanted to write more of the story yesterday, so today I will be reviewing the 2012 Succubi Year in Review here on the Tale…

Overall it did have its moments, but, honestly, I found it hard to come up with ten good things that happened with Succubi… And no, again, I did not include my own works and Succubus.net in this list… I probably will never do that…

Here, in mostly order from best thing to not so much so, are my top ten of Succubi moments for 2012…

  1. The Devil Girls – The Sinfest online comic series seems to have a lot, and I mean a lot, of Devil Girls popping up all over the place. I really have no idea what it all means, but, I was thrilled with the choices Fuchsia made and where her relationship is going… She even shared a kiss with Crim so… that made me happy… There are some of the new Girls that are more devilish than others, and Fern, the green one, I do think is more Succubi than Devil Girl.
  2. Thaumatology Book Series – The Thaumatology book series by Niall Teasdale continued this year… Still one of the best series for me personally and I recommend it more than I can say… Good writing is everything and Niall gives that and more with every book released. Highly, highly recommended.
  3. Danish Succubi Films – I don’t mean the pastry, I mean that in 2012 there were three really interesting films about Succubi or having Succubi characters in them that were filmed or produced in Denmark. I find it interesting that Hollywood cannot come up with a decent Succubus film and yet the Danes can.
  4. Darkstalkers Resurrection Announced – This is good news for 2013 that was announced in 2012. Morrigan and Lilith Aensland returning anew will, and is, thrilling a lot of gamers and it is good to see them moving into the more modern age… I do hope that neither of them are changed from who they are, that would be my one fear. I don’t believe they would change them being the series most popular characters by far… I’ll hope of that at least.
  5. Dangerously Chloe – Eerie Cuties’ own Succubus went through a lot of changes in 2012 that ended with her being taken away by her mother to hell to learn about her powers. She returned in her own series called Dangerously Chloe in the latter part of 2012, older, different, and… more succubus-like than she was. She isn’t the shy succubus she was, I do miss that, but I have hopes for her new series in 2013.
  6. Lost Girl Television series – Really a disappointment for 2012 to be honest. The second season came to a close on a high note and then Syfy got involved. At which point the series three premiere was moved into January 2013 from September 2012. Now, it is starting in less than one week’s time, so the wait is over, but, I fear something. I fear that the series will lose a lot of the fan base for being away so long. I hope I am wrong, more than I can say, but… I really don’t know. What’s worse is that, knowing Syfy, they will force the thirteen episodes we will see to be split in half with a six month gap between the two parts. I hope not… Really.
  7. Any Succubus Themed Book – I found that this past year that just about any writer with the slightest idea about Succubi was releasing a book about them. That wouldn’t bother me so much, except that they never seem to see Succubi as anything but sex dolls or evil incarnate. That gets old, really fast for me. I think in the past year there have been only four books that I really did like a lot. Considering that something like 150 books came out in 2012, that’s a lousy ratio. Many of these books are less than 20 pages in length, still more less than 6 pages. And in all of those cases they are charging $3 for them. That, most of all, gets my tail up. It isn’t anything like fair play and I wish that there would be a legitimate listing by Amazon of the books they are selling with regards to their length. At least there would be some warning that we are being taken… in more ways than one. Maybe I need to get off my tail and write my own works to show what Succubi really are.
  8. Any Halloween Costume with any connection to Succubi – It’s getting worse and worse by the year for costumes and I fear that its not going to get any better. Honestly I should try designing my own costumes and selling them for all of the junk that is out there. It’ll never happen of course, but I am so tempted.
  9. 666 Park Avenue – Possibly the worst of the worst for 2012. A television series which held a little promise based on the book, but, in the end it was cancelled, and as much as it had some promise for Succubi, it never really got to the point where it happened. After the cancellation, it was announced that the last three episodes would be released… in the summer of 2013 mind you, to complete the first season. But it just wasn’t anything worth watching and with the cast, that was absolutely shocking to me.
  10. Devil May Cry Succubus – Okay, this is the worst thing I saw in 2012 connected with Succubi to be honest. This is a new game that will be released in 2013 and the preview of the succubus? Well, she isn’t sexy, she isn’t even a she as far as I can tell. Just so wrong… wrong, wrong, wrong. Did I mention wrong? I really have problems with the concept and that’s putting it mildly. There isn’t a single thing about this monsters, and it is a monster, that even hints at it being a succubus. But it is called one and all i can do is shake my tail and look away.

And as for my site… A few highlights for the year that Succubus.net had:

  • The Tale has over 972,000 views in total.
  • The Tale has over 1,800 posts on it.
  • The SuccuWiki has surpassed well over 3.5 million views.
  • The SuccuWiki contains almost 2,000 articles on Succubi.
  • The Gallery of the Succubi has over 2,200 images of Succubi.
  • The Tale and this site had their fifth anniversary in November.

Not a long list, but overall I really shouldn’t complain about what I have been able to accomplish with the support of my family…

I wish you all a Happy 2013… May your coming year be happy and wonderful for you all…

Speak into the Air by TeraS – Part Six

The last Tale of 2012 arrives… And with it Lily’s questions and problems are… more.

My thanks to my heart for fixing this mess…

And my wishes to all for a Happy New Year…

Speak into the Air

By TeraS

Chapter Six

Lily was sure she heard her Eternal. Everything was … right: exactly, blissfully, perfectly, right. Even more, she felt the aftershocks of … everything coursing through her body. It had to be him; he was the only one …

But it wasn’t his voice she heard.

“Come on. Easy now. Let me help you up.”

She opened her eyes to see who was there, but her vision was blurry and, while the voice was male, she couldn’t tell exactly who it was. She didn’t resist when he helped her to her feet, nor did she stop him from leading her … wherever it was that he was taking her.

“Just take it easy, we’re almost at the couch, and you can rest there.”

She felt him beside her, but she couldn’t feel him. Normally when she was with someone she could feel their desires, their thoughts, their … soul. Not this time. There was something there, but it was muted, indistinct, unclear.

This should have given Lily a fright. She should have run, or pulled away from him, but instead she just held onto his arm and managed to sit down when he let go of her. It was in that moment she realized something.

Her tail.

She couldn’t feel her tail!

That shook her, and she brushed a hand over her forehead to feel her horns and found that they weren’t there either.

“Just rest. I’ll be right back.”

She listened to him leave, the sound of his footsteps on the floor before they faded away and she was alone again. Or so she thought.

“Hello Lily. It’s nice to finally meet … you.” A female voice this time. Again, she didn’t recognize it, and now Lily began to tense up and become truly frightened by what was going on.

“Shhh … no … It’s okay. I’m not going to hurt you and neither is he.”

“Who … who are you? Both of you?”

“It’s not important right now. We’ll help you.”

Lily laughed softly, “I’m supposed to say that.”

“I know.”

The woman, whomever she was, placed something cold over Lily’s forehead and then settled onto the couch with Lily. There was something … familiar about what was happening, but she couldn’t put her finger on what it was. Lily reached up and took off the cloth as she tried to stand up: “I’m okay and …”

… and she dropped right back onto the couch when the dizzy spell hit.

“No, you aren’t okay. I can tell that much.”

Lily did manage to lean forward and put her head in her hands to try and steady herself as she heard him return.

“How are you?”

“Confused …” Lily couldn’t help the sigh that came from her.

“… you’ll be all right.” He left again and it was just Lily and this … woman.

“It’s hard to understand what’s going on right now, but that will pass and things will make sense soon enough.”

Lily actually laughed at those words. Nothing made any sense at that moment and what was worse seemed to be that the two people here knew more about what was going on than she did. “What’s so funny?” she demanded.

“Oh… just…”

“Just what?”

“Just rest a while. We’ll talk when you can.”

A headache started to pound in her temples and she put the cloth over her forehead again. There was something so familiar about all of this. Not the woman, just what was happening … somehow. For a while, Lily just stayed there, the woman beside her occasionally tending to her before leaving her alone, just sitting there and waiting.

The headache passed and then, finally, Lily’s vision cleared, and she could see the woman beside her and she drew in her breath in surprise: “Hi.”

It was her, but it wasn’t her. It was her face, her body, her voice, everything including her tail and horns and that damnable dress that her tail had made her wear. But how was that possible? “What the hell is going on?”

“A choice, Lily. One you need to make, otherwise it’s all going to happen exactly the way it did the last time you chose …”

“I … I don’t understand.”

The other Lily nodded and then said, “You won’t … not for a long time.”

Lily looked at herself finally for the first time and realized something. She wasn’t wearing the dress, she was dressed in an oversized shirt and that was all. This just made no sense at all, and her anger began to boil within her …

… or it did until her other self’s tail wrapped itself around her right wrist and it all drained away into nothing. “Just be calm and listen to me … please?”

Lily found she couldn’t resist the words and became quiet, listening, and trying to understand what she was told next.

“You are confused because, in this moment, there are two of us.”

The headache started again, “What are you talking about?”

The sigh was so very familiar before the answer began “At this moment you haven’t made a choice, a very critical one in your life. This is the moment when you decided to leave him … forever.”

Memories started to come now, unbidden: the face of her Eternal, but not; someone else that was, but wasn’t. It was all so confusing and the pain got worse and worse. “Don’t get what you mean … so confused.”

“You will. Or rather, we both will.”

“What are you talking about?”

“It’s hard to exist here with you, having the memories of the past with the knowledge of the future. Things you shouldn’t know you do … sort of.”

“Please …”

The other Lily was quiet and then said, “I’m here to take your place, Lily. He won’t know the difference. I’m going to change things.”

The laugh was ever so bitter, “Because it’s the right thing to do for the right reason. You … I … made the wrong choice. We picked wrong after it all happened. We should have picked the right Eternal. We didn’t.”

Lily shook her head, trying to get rid of the pain within her, but it just got worse still. “Why am I hurting so much?”

“Because I’m here and we both can’t be.”

Lily’s voice was so quiet, “Are you going to …”

“No. But …”—the other Lily held up the wish—“… but this makes something special possible.”

Lily looked at the paper, still confused. She knew what it said … didn’t she? It was all so confusing now, and just getting worse by the moment.

“He asked for a second chance, Lily. He wants us. No, that’s not right. He wants you. He doesn’t want you to make the choice to leave, to leave him behind.”

For an instant, Lily’s thoughts cleared, “I’d never leave him.”

“You would. You … I did.”

The confusion came back; which him was she talking about? She gave her heart to him; she gave her soul to him. God, it was so confusing, and the pain just got worse and worse by the moment.

The other Lily continued: “We have a chance to fix this, to be happy, really happy. He wants this, I want this, and, if you could only understand, then you’d want it, too.”

“Please, tell me.”

Lily felt a hand on her chin and she looked into her own eyes. “If we choose as we did, you will lose them both. If that happens then we’ll spend our life after waiting to die.”

Lily finally saw the look in her own eyes: the look of loss, of self-loathing, of certainty that there was nothing to live for. “I’m sorry.”

Her other self held the wish up to her. “Then, together, we fix it.”

For a long moment they both looked at the wish, and then they both touched it with their fingers.

Another a flash of both light and darkness came …

… and there was one Lily, with horns and tail, wearing the oversized shirt, and sitting on the couch, waiting for him to return to her. She heard him approaching, and made her horns and tail vanish from sight.

“Are you okay?”

She looked at him, holding back the tears and said, “I’m perfect.”

“How’s the headache?”

“Nothing to worry about. But …”—she held the wish to him, and the confusion was so plain to see in his eyes—“… I need you to read this.”

“What’s it say?”

“Read it? Please?”

“Because you’ll never believe me if you don’t.”

A Review of How to Summon a Succubus by Roxie Feurouge

Sometimes the core of a story about Succubi isn’t so much the Succubus themselves, but instead the folly of humans that decide to summon them. Especially ones that don’t realize just how foolish they are. This usually results in things taking a turn for the worse. The question is, what is the turn, and how bad could it possibly be?

How to Summon a Succubus by Roxie Feurouge

  • Title: How to Summon a Succubus
  • Author: Roxie Feurouge
  • Publishing Date: May 29, 2012
  • Length: 3,000 Words
  • ASIN: B0087FJIOO
  • This work at Amazon.com

It is the story of:

Meridiana the succubus has been without a victim for 23 years, when suddenly an influx of internet users start using the ritual to summon them. David is a young man in college who finds just such a ritual on the internet- but gets one of his ingredients wrong, and so he is at Meridiana’s mercy. Will he regret summoning a sex demon?

David asks on a website for a method to summon a Succubus and he gets one. The problem is that he doesn’t know all of the traps and pitfalls and Meridiana, the succubus he summons, is more than willing to take advantage of that…

I think the main problem I have with this story was that it was very short and as such it became simply a hot flash or a stroke erotica story. That’s a shame really as the beginning of the story held a lot of promise really, but when it got interesting… it stopped being so for me.

Meridiana’s background story was interesting, and I would have liked to know more about it, but in this case it was setting only and the story moved away from that as quickly as possible. Past that, we watch as Meridiana watches and plans as David does the same and then summons her. Everything after that is sex really with not much else happening.

When Meridiana springs her trap, that is an odd moment, but it makes sense in the story. What happens to David afterwards is a bit brutal and the ending was, really, quite expected to be honest. I thought I would like her at the beginning of the story, but that soon faded away as her personality was all “gloat and be evil” and not a lot else. That’s kind of thin as a character and I have issues with it.

I can see this becoming a series of stories about Meridiana, which would be more interesting I think overall, but the author needs to tighten up their writing some. The work didn’t flow smoothly for one thing, the characters were paper thin for the most part as well. Oddly enough, the minor characters were more interesting than the main ones for the most part.

I have to wonder if the author might have been better served to not end the work with the first meeting of David and Meridiana, but to tell about the week she is there. I think that would have made for a better story, better characters and involved me more in it.

Three pitchforks out of five.

The story didn’t flow well for me, I didn’t care for Meridiana all that much as well. It was short, much too short and really it could have been more than a stroke story…

But it wasn’t.

A Dark Succubus YouTube…

Now, I know that, for the most part, Succubi are on the dark side of things… I came across a YouTube video of a really interesting image of that, and, the artist also linked to their page on DeviantArt for the completed work…

And if you can’t see it here on the Tale…

And, the completed work…

Sucucbus Character Study by Artbyans

You can also find this work here on DeviantArt and the artist’s page is here as well….

What I found interesting is that the artist says that the Lost Girl series inspired this work and I can’t quite see how that fits into this work… Mind you, I would love to see Bo with horns, just once in the series…

This is a very dark Succubus of course, and that of course is revealed by her red hand, covered in blood I assume, as well as her greyish skin and spikes…

It’s an interesting interpretation of a Succubus, and somehow the overall look works really well…

Interesting and thought provoking I think…
