The 2013 Succubi Year in Review

It is the last day of 2013 and is my thing this time of year it is time to review the things that happened in the world of the Succubi this year. And so this is the 2013 Succubi Year in Review here on the Tale…

It seemed, for the most part, that like in 2012 it was hard to come up with ten good things that happened that were connected to Succubi, so once again it will be a list of what I thought were the best to the worst that happened over the past year. I wish it all was good things, but… maybe in 2014 that will happen… I can hope so.

Here, in mostly order from best thing to not so much so, are my top ten of Succubi moments for 2013…

  1. Writers Taking a Chance to Write Succubi that are different – It was very promising to me that authors like John Dylena with his Raethiana and Succubus’ Sub series, was a prime example of having Succubi be more than they are. Another was The Celibate Succubus by Barton Paul Levenson where, again, a Succubus learns that she is not evil, she is what and who she wants to be. One other was another chapter in the Succubus United series by L. J. Holmes where again, Succubi aren’t stereotypical. They have more than what is expected of them. Finally, and it was a lovely way to end the year, was the appearance of The Wielder series by David Gosnell were the Succubus is, so very much, a Succubus, but her secrets, her needs and wants come to the fore and set a path for her character’s growth in the future. In the end, the most important thing is making a character who is, truly, alive. It was a pleasure this year to find a handful of writers that accomplished that.
  2. Succubi in Comics – Really the number of Succubi appearing in web series has been increasing this year. There’s Sinfest, Dangerously Chloe, The Girl from Hell City to mention a few. But there is also independent comic book companies that have been releasing comic books with Succubi as main characters in them. Now, I admit that a few of these have the Succubus being… well… a Succubus in the most stereotypical way possible. But the thing is, getting past the huge number of sex scenes and finding the character beneath that… I think they are interesting. Perhaps they will tone back the sex a little bit and allow the character to poke her head out of the sand along with her tail… We’ll see.
  3. Succubi Appearing in Games – I found it interesting to see the number of Succubi that have appeared in quite a number of Asian video games this past year. Now, I admit, that a lot of them are… well… over endowed and over hyper in a lot of ways, but they are Succubi and they aren’t all horror and evil… Mind you the number of nose bleeds that happen as a result is amazing. I’d like to see more or be able to play some of them sometime this year…
  4. Thaumatology Book Series – The Thaumatology book series by Niall Teasdale came, if not to a close, then an extended pause this year. I have to say that it ended on a good point, Lily is much more than she was at the beginning of the series, and the world still has a lot to tell. I’ll always watch for the next work from Niall… It always makes me smile.
  5. Horns, Hooves and Wings – One of the more promising things I found this year for those of us that keep looking for that perfect set of horns, or hooves or wings for that costume that will turn you into one of the Succubi is that there are a lot of independent cosplay designers that have started to produce such things at a reasonable cost. That makes so much easier to design Halloween costumes and not look cheesy by any stretch of the imagination. The talent that goes into some of those designs is stunning and well worth taking a good look at and supporting those artists who create those works of art…
  6. Lost Girl Television series – Still in the bottom half of the ranking this year and that’s mainly because the series just does not seem to have a focus. It rambles, goes off on tangents, forgets that the main character… is a Succubus remember? I fear that the series jumped the shark recently with the Christmas themed episode but I really hope that it hasn’t. It still has good ratings, it’s premiering the fourth season in the United States shortly, and if the ratings hold, they are likely going to be having a fifth season. I want to see that. I want to see the series get back to Bo. To find out who she is. The season has lost its way, but it can get back to where it should be… It better honestly. I read too many places where people can’t handle the writing, the plots and demand more meat to the story because of the talent that are the characters in the series. 2014 I hope is a turning point. Really.
  7. Any Succubus Themed Book That Just Doesn’t Get It – The trend of publishing books about Succubi continued this year with the vast majority of them having almost exactly the same plot line. Succubus appears, meets man, makes him have sex with her, she kills him, story ends. The stories are thin on sexuality, heavy on horror, pain, and a lot of things that I just don’t care for. Then mixed into that we have vampires being confused with Succubi again. Honestly this is starting to become a meme and I have not desire to see it as one. It was something rare to find an author that decided to break from what everyone else was writing and not be stereotypical. Some did that, I’ve mentioned them already… But so many just don’t get it…
  8. The Lack of Succubi Appearing in Movies This Year – Not one Succubi in any mainstream movie this year, and otherwise, independent releases had only two this year with any connection with Succubi at all. There is one independent movie in 2014 that is Succubi themed, but honestly having seen the previous of it, I’m not at all looking forward to seeing it I regret…
  9. Any Halloween Costume with any connection to Succubi – Things did not improve this year, in fact they seem to be getting worse and I thought that was plainly impossible. How much more wrong could I possibly be? Looking at the average of all of the costumes I looked at this year, the average is… 2.1. That’s so disheartening I cannot stand it. Would it be so much to ask that the costume designers take that pencil marked “trashy” and toss it into a trash can please? Sexy and desirable sells soooo much better. They should try that and see what happens.
  10. A Certain Song called Succubi by a Singer that shall remain nameless – Yes that’s meant to be vague and i am quite sure that a lot of people know exactly who I am I referring to. Didn’t like it, didn’t care for it, doesn’t do a single thing for me and, most of all, it has absolutely nothing to do with Succubi whatsoever. But, of course, it is an attention getter and it did that for all of the wrong reasons. All I can say is that song will never be on my playlist thank you very much.

And as for my site… A few highlights for the year that had:

  • The Tale has over 1.2 million views in total.
  • The Tale has over 2,200 posts on it.
  • The SuccuWiki has surpassed well over 6.9 million views.
  • The SuccuWiki contains almost 2,500 articles on Succubi.
  • The Gallery of the Succubi has over 2,900 images of Succubi.
  • The Tale and this site had their sixth anniversary in November.

A fair number of accomplishments I think and I hope that the coming year will see more and better things appearing…

I wish you all a Happy 2014… May your coming year be happy and wonderful for you all…

The best part of a succubi year in review is that which my Dear One is far too modest to mention: in addition to all of those views and comments in the Tale are the faithful, witty, wonderful posts and stories that Her Majesty Tera makes sure appear every day–stories especially, since, I am convinced, these are changing the ways that others tell the story of succubi . . . and that is a very good thing.

*Happy New Year huggles from your heart*

All things considered, this was a pretty good year for Succubi! At the very least it feels like writers are more willing to stretch their artistic muscles when writing them. If this keeps up we might average more good stories per year then bad! The costumes still need a bunch of work, but baby steps right? Happy New Year to everybody!
