Was it too late for someone else to wander into that library?

He was bearded, bespectacled, and obviously caught up in his research, but he knew he’d never been in this wing of the library before.  A book fell from a high shelf, hit him in the head, and knocked him to the floor.  When he picked himself up, and straightened his glasses, there was the offending book, open on the floor, strange markings on its pages, and a green mist rising up, enveloping him.  The next thing he knew, he was in blackness.

Where was he?  Was he alone?  Would anyone notice his presence here?

From the darkness around him, there was the sound of a pair of heels clicking their way across a wooden floor. Slow measured steps that were almost mesmerizing in their tone.

As he awaited the owner of those shoes to appear, the darkness gave way to what seemed to be the library, save that the roof above was…. Missing… Somehow… And in its place was a royal blue sky with white fluffy clouds in it…

Then the owner of those heels that he had heard walked out from behind the next bookcase and smiled at him. This women seemed to like red. She wore a fuzzy red sweater and red leather pants. A pair of red high heels adorned her feet. She wore red nail polish and her lips were a rose red color. Only three things broke the sea of red around her. Her well tanned skin, her long raven hair that fell wildly to play around her waist, and finally her green eyes…

She regarded him with amusement playing at her lips and said, “Yes? Can I help you?”

He was struck with her beauty, but it was her eyes that took his breath away. “I . . . I . . . I . . . um . . . came into the library looking for . . . looking for . . . for . . .”

He was confused, and aroused (not part of his normal library routine), and ready to fall at her feet . . .

She regarded him with bemusement as she asked, “Looking for? Arts? Science? Fiction? Myths? Legends?”

A moment later as she paused, a little purple kitten with purple angel wings fluttered down from the open skies above. It circled around her once before landing at his feet, closing the book with its paws and then flittering off with it again…

She crossed her arms over her chest as her hips cocked to the right and she asked him, “If you aren’t sure exactly what you are looking for that will make the search somewhat more difficult… Not impossible mind you… But difficult…”

I’m a poet, and a historian, but tonight I was reading in myths and legends.  I never expected to encounter anybody like you. Forming coherent sentences before this woman was taking all his concentration.  He almost had the feeling that she was giving him mental energy to help focus his thoughts.

She smiled at his words and replied, “Me? There’s nothing really special about me is there? But then it’s not so much about me as it is about you when you think about it… You are looking for myths and legends… There are many many many of those in the known and unknown universes…”

She rested her right hand against the bookshelf and asked him, “Do you believe in all of the myths as they are told or do you believe that they have a grain of truth surrounded by much created chaff?”

There may have been nothing special about her, yet there was something very special about her, if only because someone this attractive was rarely seen in these depths of the library (was he still in the library?), and such women almost never spoke to him.

He took a deep breath. “I believe there is at least a grain of truth in all myths, and in some myths vast worlds of truth we could have never imagined, while some others are true just as they are told.  The great joy and excitement for me is in discovering which are which.”

And we have discovered so much together haven’t we my heart?
