Time taken to learn is time not wasted… That is something that the Queen of the Succubi remembers always…
By TeraS and JHB
He found all of this quite fascinating. He was drinking in her words, drinking in the range of colours and different shapes of the plant life around him. This was a strange world indeed, although strange was hardly bad. Strange was beautiful indeed, and fascinating.
But nothing next to Tera. She said something about succubi consuming people, and he contemplated, for just a moment, the real danger in which he might be putting himself. That contemplationg was gone in the flicker of an eyelash, however, as he listened to her moving on, telling him how her kind truly survived on their harmony with the world around them. “How wonderful, and how fitting,” he thought. She could teach him so much.
He should be feeling tired. Hiking through a forest was not normal for him; but each word energized him more.
“May we go to visit this tree, Tera? I would like to see it, perhaps feed it some words, as well. This kind of a life feeding and fed by your world seems so foreign, yet so right to me.”
Tera tried to explain as they continued towards the exit, “The Maple is an odd thing really… It exists here… In the Realm… And in three other places that I know of… Exactly the same tree each time… The same look… The same odd injury to the second branch from the bottom… The same spirit within it… Why it’s here and there and elsewhere I’m not sure of, but it appeared about a year in our time after…”
She paused then continued, “Anyway… It appeared there one morning and it’s been with me ever since… It’s almost a ritual for me every day to visit it and wish it well for another day…”
At his comment about her world Tera smiled, “Mom does good work…”
He was following, still holding her hand, as they stepped out of the library. He noticed an odd pause in the story, as if there was something Tera wanted to say, but which made her feel uncomfortable. She was clearly one to choose words carefully, but this was more than that. He stopped, and gently, but firmly took both her hands in both of his.
“This is clearly a special placed to you. I’ve been watching your face, and it takes on a special glow and your eyes an even greater gleam than usual, as you tell me about that Maple. But, just a moment ago, when you paused in the midst of your story, your face was clouded, just for the briefest moment.
“Dear lady, I would love to visit your Maple, and I would love to listen to whatever you wish to share. But, if this place is too special for you to take me, I understand; we can picnic elsewhere.
“If, on the other hand, you are holding on to something that is painful for you, it may help you to share it. I give you my most solemn promise that anything you say to me will remain strictly between the two of us. I would not breathe a word, not a sound, without your permission. You seem to be able to look into my heart; I hope you can see mine, and know you can trust me.
“And, by the way, what exactly did you mean by ‘Mom does good work’?”
Mom always does good work…
