you can’t always get what you want… Mostly because if you do that might be more than you thought it was…
Succubi see that a lot…
By TeraS and Darkside
I could feel it, clawing at the uppermost reaches of my mind.
It was a trap.
The pain was amazing, and left me twitching for a few minutes as I regained myself. I could feel the darkness pressing at my will, attempting to consume it, to consume me.
I focused my energy, and began to draw from the demons themselves. As I drew their strength, I gained some of their knowledge, and I realized they had lain this trap a long time ago, but for all their planning, they hadn’t counted on the one who fell in having a natural affinity for the Shadow while not being Evil. My anger rose at their scheming.
I moved from consuming their energy to consuming them. On this plane, what registers as sound is pure emotion, and that emotion was terror. It had been a long time before they had found a victim, and they had, in their eagerness, overextended themselves. It cost them their existence, as I consumed their souls.
And for the first time in my life, I saw the Abyss. The Void itself made manifest. A huge, gaping maw, filled with the energies it had consumed over countless eons, and yet empty. I could feel it, a mindless hole. I could become it, and control it…
I’m not a fool, however. It was eternal and infinite. I was not. The temptation passed, and I felt drawn back to the physical plane.
Talk about a crash. I felt beaten and cold, and just lay there for awhile, shivering. I was so out of it that it was a few minutes before I realized where I was.
I looked up at Tera.
“You know, a little warning would’ve been nice.”
Tera smiled softly and said, “I did warn you… That’s my way… I can’t just tell you something… I can hint and dance around it if a direct question isn’t asked of me… Ask the right question and all of the answers appear…”
She raised her right hand and bampfed a blanket to cover him. She stroked his cheek and asked, “How do you feel?”
“Alive and well, evil genie.” I teased. I sat up and blushed. I focused a moment, and the area around me blackened. When it cleared, I had pants on. “Well, that’s something, anyway. Seems I’m not fully intact yet.” I stood up shakily and grabbed the blanket, “Definately not fully operational.” I said, falling back on the couch. “I hope you don’t mind me resting for a while. You’ve kept your end of the deal, what’s mine?”
I felt something in the back of my mind, and realized how on-edge I was. I relaxed, and all my color drained away. Not, ‘I went pale’, but ‘I turned black’. Completely black, like a silhouette.
“Now this is interesting.” I focused for a second and changed back. “Very interesting.” I went dark again. “I feel better this way. Looking normal consumes energy now. I hope you don’t mind.”
Tera smiled and continued to stroke his cheek, “Your end of the deal?” She laughed softly, “Well…. Would it surprise you to know that there are a number of people trying to find themselves here? Some are on the cusp of revelations… Some may never have that moment… And others are happier for what they have become….”
She looked at his so dark form and said, “Shadows of yourself and the mysteries within…. Interesting… I think that you will have to get used to being Grey in mind and body my dear…”
She put the blanket over him to warm him somewhat. Then she moved to sit on the floor beside him, her head leaning against his chest. She sighed a little and then traced a hand slowly over his stomach. In a soft voice she said, “The spell did not complete… You are not whole yet… There is still the chance to be taken by the Void without an anchor… So the question is….”
She raised her head and looked into his eyes, “Who is your anchor?”
And so the question is, whom do you trust?
Kinda Babylon 5ish isn’t it?
