Review of Roxy the Succubus in The Middleman

So last night was the episode of The Middleman on ABC Family that introduced us to Roxy Wasserman, the Succubus of the series…

First things first, a quick TV Guidish summary of the episode for those that missed it:

The Middleman and Wendy travel to the underworld to prevent a terra-cotta warrior from releasing a long-lasting rain of fire onto the Earth. The pair get assistance from fashionista Roxy Wasserman, but Wendy has problems focusing on the mission since she’s troubled by a disagreement she had with Lacey.

Now with that out of the way, I am going to give those that don’t want to have spoilers a break.

I am not going to talk about the overall episode very much as my particular interest was on Roxy herself.

What?

I’m the Queen of the Succubi… Of course I am going to talk about the Succubi in the episode!

But I’ll say this…

The series is sort of a cross between Men In Black and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy….

Seriously…

I mean with a set of lines in the show like:

“If we are going to get into this I need a double black eye.”

“Caffeine is a drug Dubbie.”

“I’m holding a molecular stun cannon…”

“Ida. Coffee.”

“Sweet! Can that thing do a muffin?”

What do you think?

Anyway… Enough about the overall show, which BTW has really improved since the first episode…

Back to Roxy…

The first we see of her is when the Middleman and Wendy make their way to the “Famouse Fashion House”…. At 10:03 AM we are told BTW…

The scene is initially of three models posing in front of a photographer when Roxy storms into the scene dressed in a rather unflattering black dress and black necklace calling out, “Hate it. Hate it. Hate it.”

That’s all fine and I will be honest that I rather enjoyed her entrance and the comments until the point where her voice changed, extra teeth appeared and she growled, “It stinks” and growls again…

Now this is the point where I think that they would have been better served with Roxy having a pair of short black horns appear in her hair… That’s all it would really have taken to make the scene work better I think…

We were told she was a Succubus the scene before so the demonlike voice wasn’t needed really… And I will also add something that I found interesting… The Middleman said clearly that Roxy wasn’t a devil, she was a Succubi… So with that you could have changed the scene somewhat…

Imagine this for a moment…

Roxy could have walked into the scene with the little black horns I spoke of, but she would have been so much better looking in a pair of black leather pants, tight red sweater and black high heel boots…

That look for her I think would have been dynamite… And honestly, since Roxy runs the fashion house she should stand out more from the other Succubi around her…

I found that she played the Diva role a little heavy in this episode and that is something that when she returns (And I do hope she returns again…) they can tone down and move her towards a more seductive attitude…

Roxy has a wonderful smile when we see it… And I think that she could easily have just the barest hint of a bemused “I know something that you don’t” look…

Something I noticed in a slightly later scene was that she seemed to have a Book of Evil with her, which brought a smile to my lips… I thought it was perfect the way she opened it and the answers were there for her on Page 47 of the Book…

That was just so perfect in so many ways to me personally…

The thing about Roxy that I found most endearing was that she had a hint of naughtiness around her but with an edge of “I’m in charge.. Dun mess with me or you’ll see my bad side…

I also found that the occasional innuendo from her was so very well done… The sly looks she gave and the occasional hints of the seductive aspects of a Succubi were really well done…

When it came to the scene where they opened a portal to the Underworld for the Middleman and Wendy however I did get somewhat confused over the outfit that Roxy wore as well as the others in the ceremony… It looked sort of like a Roman / Egyptian merge of things which to me was rather jarring going from the mid50s look to that… Perhaps if they attempt something like that again it should be somewhat more mystical in nature and look less Romanish…

But that’s just my opinion…

Finally, the last scene we see of Roxy is when the Middleman and Windy return and the threat for the episode is over with…

And this line that Roxy speaks I think is probably the one that made me smile the most…

I don’t know about you, but I need chocolate. I said chocolate people! The good stuff!

And that just made me laugh sooooooooo much!

Overall the episode gets a 7 from me… Roxy as a Succubi…. As one that I care about and want to see again gets a 8.5….

All that would be needed is to fix her fashion sense, get her a lil pair of black horns, and let a little bit more of the naughty Succubi out to play. We saw glimpses of it that left me wanting to see so much more of that…

I really and truly hope that we do…

I think you should offer to be a wardrobe consultant for Roxy’s character!

You’ve received my review under separate cover, and I think I was less kind to Roxie than you were (do I need to be punished?). I fully agree with FF on you as wardrobe consultant. Though I’m guessing that there are a few “network weasles” (as David Letterman would say) who need sticks extracted from their butts for this whole thing to really fly. 😀

    You are both silly…

Getting to the network… Maybe that’s the big issue… It is after all ABC Family channel… Maybe they have issues with showing Roxy and the Succubi and Incubi in the series with little horns on occasion because of the “demonic” aspect to it…

Which is a little odd if you think about it…

I know that they’ll never have a decent looking tail on any of them and I accept that….

    But she’s a Succubus…

Give her a set of horns pweese?

I’m surprised that you can see my webbysite where you are Sis… I would have thought that it would have been impossible where you are at the moment…

I have been told that it is available on iTunes for US IP addresses… I also found Episode 1 on Demonoid and on a couple of other torrent sites but not this one as yet…
